Cans For Kids organised the main Cyprus event for the International Day of Climate Action organised by 350.org
Despite only having 2 weeks to set up the event, we undertook to sort and bale 350 kilos of cans during our Saturday morning sorting session between 10 am and midday. We knew we needed many more than the usual dedicated handful of weekly volunteers .. and did we get them! They came from all over Cyprus, pitched in with fervour and by midday we had done, not just 350 kilos, but half a ton! We estimate that is a saving of some 11,000lbs of CO2 in our atmosphere on the day that people across the world came together with one voice to tell their leaders to take action NOW to reduce CO2 to 350 parts per million, the amount scientists say is the safe upper limit of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere.
The Head of the European Commission Representation in Cyprus, Androulla Kaminara, and Nicosia’s Mayor, Eleni Mavrou, also took part, even donning the heavy-duty gloves to sort some cans!
As well as a giant 350 sign made from Coca Cola cans (Lanitis Bros sponsored the event), an even bigger 350 was fashioned out of the baled cans, and “the photo” was taken to send to 350.org, who will be handing all the photos to UN delegates ahead of the all-important meeting on climate change taking place in Copenhagen in December.
A brilliant effort by all concerned – thank you everyone.
